Spam costs are rising for workplaces

BizReport says spam costs are rising at work.

Based on the amount of time workers spend on weeding out spam, Nucleus estimated that companies will lose $1,934 for every employee in 2004, compared to $874 in 2003, said Shruti Yadav, the report's author.

This is interesting because it is actually a huge savings compared to this recent post on Spamblogging (it says that spam costs companies $5K per employee every year).

Regardless of the actual cost, it is easy to imagine that with wages on the rise, or with spam on the rise, you will see an increase in money wasted on spam.

The real point of these estimates of course is to solidify the point in managers' minds (or whoever it is at companies that authorizes expenditures on new software) so they will then be more likely to buy new software to get rid of spam.
It benefits the anti-spam software companies to have an analyst say that things are awful since it puts people into a position where they are more likely to buy their products.

That said - things really are legitimately awful when it comes to spam - the actual numbers on the other hand seem to vary.
