Wired has an article up that the U.N. has met and discussed the issue of spam and what, if anything, should be done about it (presumably by them).
While I do agree that spam is a problem and is annoying, I think that government should not be brought in for internet regulation. The CAN-SPAM act in the States is questionable enough (is it working? will it be abused?) - I'm for it if it will work - but I am nervous when the governments of the world start to talk about ways that they can control some part of the internet.
Ever since its inception they have been trying to gain control of it, and IMO that is the last thing we want.
They have been using pornography and pirating media as their reasons for needing to save us from ourselves in the past - and the last thing I want to see is a global instance over it because of spam.
Let the intelligent members of the world deal with the internet and governments can get back to their own thing - shifting money around and fighting.
