Two recent posts (1, 2) on LiveJournal discuss the measures they are taking to deal with spam - both for the staff, and for their users.
They mention that they are using SBL/XBL lists on for their staff to limit the amount of spam that they are getting, and then they have a few new tricks of their own for the blog side of things.
It will be interesting to see how that works out over time. It seems to have helped with the issues I was seeing on my blog account there - it hasn't stopped spam in the blogs, but it has massively reduced the amount of it. The spammer can only get off a few hits instead of an unlimited barrage like it was before.
